Emergencies with fixed braces:
– A bracket comes off? … if the bracket is firmly attached to the rubber ligature or wire ligature, it can wait until the next appointment. Still, let us know so that we can plan more time for the next appointment. If the loose bracket bothers you, call us right away and schedule an appointment
Does the wire poke? …better call us and make an appointment. If the office cannot be reached (weekend, holiday, bridge day), you can try covering the spot with protective wax. If that does not help, you can call the orthodontic emergency service between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. You can get the corresponding address as well as further information from KZV-BERLIN by calling 030-89004-333 or at www.kzv-berlin.de/notdienst
– Has a wire slipped out of the last band or bracket at the back? … If it doesn’t bother you, you can wait until your next appointment. You can also cover the end of the wire with protective wax. If it does bother you, call us right away to schedule an appointment. If the office is unavailable (weekend, vacation, long weekend), you can try covering the area with protective wax. If that doesn’t help, you can call the orthodontic emergency service between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. You can obtain the address and further information from KZV-BERLIN by calling 030-89004-333 or at www.kzv-berlin.de/notdienst
– Are your teeth sensitive? It’s normal for your teeth to be sensitive for the first 2–3 days after your braces are fitted because they need to get used to the movement. During the first 2–3 days, we recommend that you avoid eating solid foods; instead, stick to yogurt, soup, and white bread. If this tooth sensitivity hasn’t improved after 2 or 3 days, please make an appointment at the office. You may also experience this increased sensitivity for 1–2 days after an archwire change, though it is less severe than at the start of treatment.
– If you notice sores on your oral mucosa: Call the office right away and schedule an appointment. Rinsing with Kamilossan or chamomile tea, or covering the affected area with protective wax, should help relieve the pain until your next available appointment. If the office is unavailable (weekends, vacations, long weekends), you can try covering the area with protective wax. If that doesn’t help, you can call the orthodontic emergency service between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. You can obtain the relevant address and further information from KZV-BERLIN by calling 030-89004-333 or at www.kzv-berlin.de/notdienst
– The bonded retainer has come loose: to prevent the teeth from shifting, call the practice and schedule an appointment.
Emergencies with removable braces
– The braces or a wire break …please no longer wear the braces and schedule an appointment with us
– The braces are putting pressure or keep falling out (don't fit)… please do not adjust the braces anymore and call the practice
– The braces are pressing against the teeth after adjustment… It is normal for the teeth to hurt a bit after adjusting the braces because the plastic presses against the teeth,
so that the teeth can move. After 1-2 days at the latest, this pressure on the teeth should have disappeared. If you still feel pressure, please call the office to schedule an appointment.
– Braces lost? … Call the practice and schedule an appointment to have a new appliance made. In most cases, the costs for a one-time replacement are covered by health insurance. For a second replacement, the costs are borne by the patient.
