Active plates are removable appliances that „snap“ into place when inserted into the upper and/or lower jaw and fit relatively snugly. They are primarily used for individual tooth movements and jaw expansion. The effect of these plates is achieved through screws and springs (active elements). The screws are „turned“ according to instructions, thereby causing tooth movement or jaw expansion.

Functional jaw orthopedic (FKO) appliances are removable braces used in children and adolescents during their growth phase to correct jaw misalignments early and biologically. Instead of merely shifting teeth, they utilize the natural muscle forces of the tongue, lips, and cheeks to specifically stimulate jaw growth, improve lip closure, and promote healthy nasal breathing. Space maintainers are removable braces that are used prophylactically to keep gaps open. Dental gaps caused by the premature loss of primary teeth should be kept open to prevent neighboring teeth from tipping and thus preserve the space for the permanent tooth in the jaw. Wearing space maintainers at night is usually sufficient, as the teeth are not actively moved, but only held in place.

The rapid palatal expander consists of a special screw (Hyrax screw) that is welded to the bands of deciduous molars or premolars and permanent molars and is then firmly cemented in place. By turning the screw, the upper jaw is expanded in the area of the growth suture in the middle of the palate (median palatine suture). As a clinical sign of successful maxillary expansion, a temporary gap appears between the central incisors (diastema). In addition to conventional rapid maxillary expansion (RME), there is also the option of connecting the Hyrax screw with lateral acrylic bite blocks and cementing it in place. Another type is the hybrid Hyrax, in which a conventional RME is combined with mini-implants in the anterior region of the palate.
